Red Queen Simulator

Pantherion’s Red Queen Simulator1 is a software application that performs a simulation of evolutionary interactions among species in an idealized ecological community, as described in a scientific publication (Damuth, 2007). A version of the application was used to perform the published research; the version publicly distributed here (1.5) differs only in having a somewhat simplified interface and in minor internal features to enhance the ease of use on specific platforms.

The application runs with a graphical user interface that allows users to alter most of the parameters of the underlying model, including turning off the interactions altogether. It is written in Java and will run on almost any platform.

1. The application's model of evolution in communities is akin to that underlying Van Valen's Red Queen's hypothesis, hence the application's name. (Van Valen, L. 1973. A new evolutionary law. Evolutionary Theory 1:1-30.)
